Obituary: Michael Crichton

Just read on sci-fi wire that Michael Crichton has passed away after fighting cancer aged 66.  He created not only Jurassic Part, but also Congo and ER.  He was also the writer behind 'Prey' which was a great book, if not a little sensationalist, on the risks of nanotech.

Meetup advert

Mozilla Geode

Okay, I am not very good at this jounralism malarky, so this is really just going to end up more a thought-vomit than anything else.  Google 3 beta1 is going to have geocoding built in to, and for us users that cant wait, we can download the new Geode extension for firefox 3.  Now, sadly I couldn't get it to work on my office computer, not sure why, could be a UK thing.

But my main interest comes from how useful this could be.  I recently watched Dave Gormans America Unchained where he found it hard to find local service stations that weren't owned by 'The Man'.  Now, with this on your phone, you could in theory have it show you automatically where all these stations are in your browser rather than having to install a seperate app.  And so, any device with mozilla firefox would be able to track location.

CASE:
Go to a new city for one night, want to know the closest pub, go to beerintheevening.com, straight away it lists the closest pubs to where you are.  No need to tell google maps, or know the postcode for where you are.  Whilst I am sure further uses other then time saving utilities will come from this, I am still quite interested in this now.

Why oh why doesn't it work on my computer!

Fry is on Twitter

Whilst I have always had my reservations surrounding twitter, I do find it interesting, especially how it can be quickly read, so not taking too much of your time up.  No I can bring twitter to those that may not usually be interested.  Mr Stephen Fry is now Twittering, oh yes.

Waterkula

Here's a cool twitter feed to subscribe to if you work in an office.  Every hour it posts a new link for you to remind you to go drink some water.  The link is usually something random and a little bit interesting.

I may have to subscribe.

Prius 2010

The new 2010 prius in all it's glory.  Whilst a wave of smug befalls anyone buying such a car, I think it looks really sleek, and would under ordinary circumstances, be tempted to buy one as my new car (replacing the poor deceased Daewoo Matiz, codename "Liono").  So tempted in fact that the other day, at a toyots garage I saw one of the 2003 models, and was tempted to touch (even though it is strictly frowned upon).  Sadly, I have no garage, so the chargin of the electrical aspect of the car, which is the main selling point, would be complicated.

Nevertheless, it is pretty.  But how does it handle, and when will they put in these new solar panels, I am curious about scratching and how to clean them.

Live like an egyptian

Okay this may be old news, I am still catching up on some feeds since my holiday a while back.  But imagine living in a pyramid, that's kinda cool (especially for those stargate fans out there).  Then consider it carbon neutral living, now you can feel smug aswell as cool.  Now imagine the lifts going vertical and horizontal so you can get from one corner to the oposite, oh, I am getting excited.  Finally, the cherry on the chicken is that it uses steam (aswell as other methods) to create energy.  A steampunk city, now that is awesome.  Sadly it's sheer size probably means it wont happen, it is after all an entire city of 2.3 square kilometres and has no cars allowed.  Still, a man can dream cant he?

Energy Ball

Oooh, I want a house so I can have one of these.  its called an 'energy ball', and if the fact of owning an energy ball isn't enough for you, it's the first approach at making an attractive small scale wind turbine for residential use.  It uses air, and compressed liquids, and physics stuff.  It looks a little bit modern art, i'd want it to replicate the black iron you get in gardens, and have an added weathervane beneath as they are always useful.

Water on mars + twitter!

Okay, 2 items in one, both, welldone mars for having water.  But how cool is the fact that all this news was first sent to the public through twitter.  This is a great use of an app that I otherwise considered a little dull for general use other than brainstorming.  This basically does what rss does, but makes it all a little bit cooler.

Virgin Galactic launch 'eve'

Well I am now torn in two directions.  I am currently reading Asimovs robot stories, and as ever, his visions about the future and space travel are amazing, and I would love to be around as that all begins one day.  But at the same time, I wonder at exactly how much damage to that same future each flight is causing.
It's a conundrum that it is.

Okay, for thoise wondering, this is a car not a dyson, its an electric car aimed at solving issues of space when parked, it neatly folds iself up.  I have no idea what happends if it does this and someone is still inside, or can you drive it whilst in that position?

Alice Chess Set

This is just another of those chess sets I really want to own.  At first glance, it looks like a regular chess-set, but it is based on 'Alice through the Looking glass', on how when alice goes through the mirror, she becomes a chess piece, this is expressed by the way that the pieces, when off the board look solid, and the mirror is shown, but as they entire the game, they become a chess piece, showing the transition.

This is a great idea, and I really like it, I believe it was a college project, so not for sale, but if it is, I would be interested in owning this piece of cool.

If I had a room that needed dividers (say a large office to be divided into two) I would definately use this.  They are card pieces that slot into one another to create walls, these could then be constantly moved, and rooms reshaped for every purpose.  Although, how stable are they if the windows open and a gust of air comes through, hmm, I am not so sure.

Wind powered Dubai block

More architectural wonders from the world of eco living.  This massive building is being built in Dubai, and each floor rotates indipendantly of the others.  In between each floor is a set wind turbine, allowing this building to not only power itself, but many more things aswell.  I'm not quite there with understanding kwh, but the building is expected to produce approx 1,200,000kwh.

Now, I am not sure how much will be spare.  But to put into perspective, the average london home uses under 600kwh a month, so that is 7200kwh a year.  This means that the building creates enough energy for approx 166 london homes, I dare say a large amount of this will be used by itself, but that is an incredible number to be throwing about, hopefully this catches on to other designs in this world (and maybe the UK government will stop preaching, and start doing something big, incredible, and inspiring about this issue).

70 Amazing Business Cards - Fubiz™

I am in the process of trying to sort out business cards (trying to decide on whether to go down the moocards route due to budget), and one of my friends put me onto this site of business card designs, some are ingenious in shape and material, others (as below) just look really nice, but use a standard shape, maybe this is the route I should be taking, center my content, and see what happens, I think I may end up sending off and getting several designs back, and let them do the talking, seeing if and where I get the work from.

Good old trial and error market research can you expect better.  Although, if anyone knows of a good card company that aren't over priced, I may be interested, i'll design, just need the printing on the cards done.

New electric motorbike design

I just love this new bike, it makes me very happy when a design works, and at the same time, absolutely ignores convention.  I can just imagine the conversation:

Down the Rose and Crown
Hey man, you ever wondered what would happen if strange things had children
You mean like a segway and a motorcycle
yeah, but that would be crazy, wouldn't it?

Look at it, it takes up so little space, it's electric, and futuristic, which is always good.  I do get sick of seeing all the identically base design on motorcycles, I can understand it on racers, as they are honed to race, but a road bike has so much more breadth for design possibilities depending on lifestyle.  This would be a great runaround bike, popping into town and back.  I really would love one, and they don't sound too pricey (in comparison) $8000.  But then, i'm not sure about top speeds, or road worthiness.
